Rudolf Pilsel
Rudolf began working in wood at the age of fifteen, fascinated by the possibilities of making beautiful things from this natural material. A degree in design in the early 1970’s rounded off formal education during which time, under the tutelage of Wilfred Saunders, a violin maker working in Nottingham, Rudolf made his first violin.
Established in Crewe, Cheshire, his workshop produced all instruments of the violin family, along with bows for the same. These instruments and bows quickly came to the attention of professional players, teachers and students. Over the next forty plus years, the steady production of high quality instruments has graced the platforms of the leading concert venues being played by professional musicians, teachers, amateurs and students.

The bright orange shavings and dust turn purple on contact with water. The wood, pernambuco, was used on former times as a source of purple dye. It is irritant and a face mask and eye protection is a wise idea. Splinters of pernambuco wood are very sharp, very painful and very difficult to extract!! The bright orange of newly worked pernambuco darkens with exposure to light finally turning a deep orange brown to nearly black!! The bow on the far right began bright orange!!!
